The Fashion Industry is really messing with our minds. I wear only two sizes larger than I did when I got married 25 years ago, yet, (sadly), I am 50 pounds heavier. Something isn't right here.
I sometimes hear that Marilyn Monroe wore a size 18!!! It sounds SHOCKING and like a victory for curvy women everywhere - that somehow, the sex symbol of a generation was a plus-sized woman. However, at that time, a size 18 was a woman with a 30 inch waist. Hardly a plus-size. Marilyn Monroe would have worn essentially a size 10 today.
Check out this pattern that we just recently sold. The sizing is very different than the sizes of today. I have several more I will be adding to my Etsy shop in the coming days. Meanwhile, we women are happily wearing much "smaller" sizes (smaller numbers, really) than our mothers and grandmothers did. And, it seems the higher priced the store, the lower that number is. At some stores, I wear the "same" size I did in my youth. It's just a little crazy.
